ABWAK is delighted to collaborate with Wild Welfare and UK Animal Care Technicians (UKACT) to deliver this engaging one-day Animal Welfare Workshop, bringing together expertise from across the zoo and animal welfare sectors to support best practice in animal welfare assessment and management.

Designed for animal care professionals at all stages of their careers, this interactive workshop will take you from the foundations of animal welfare science through to conducting practical welfare assessments. Through a combination of presentations, discussions and hands-on activities, you'll develop a deeper understanding of what animal welfare really means, how it differs from animal care, and how evidence-based assessments can be used to drive meaningful improvements for the animals in our care.

Led by Sarah Bonser-Blake (Wild Welfare) and Dr Ellen Williams (Harper Adams University), with support from UKACT and ABWAK, the workshop combines academic knowledge with practical experience to equip delegates with the confidence and skills to critically evaluate animal welfare and apply their learning within their own organisations.

Workshop topics include:

• Introduction to animal welfare science

• A deeper dive into the Five Domains Model

• Understanding the differences between animal care and animal welfare

• Inputs, outputs and animal-based welfare indicators

• Introduction to animal welfare assessment

• Practical session: Conduct your own animal welfare assessments

• Group reflections and discussions on applying assessment findings to drive positive welfare change

 

By the end of the workshop, delegates will have a stronger understanding of animal welfare assessment methodologies, increased confidence in carrying out welfare assessments, and practical tools to help embed positive welfare change within their own collections.
